Summer Service-Learning Trip

I joined the South Texas Human Rights Center along the Southern border in Fafarious,Tx. Everyday, dead bodies are being discovered due to dehydration. To combat this tragedy of death by policy, we’ve been constructing humanitarian water stations for migrants. In doing so, we looked past policy and stereotypes typically associated with migrants. Instead, we focused our energy on one thing: humanity. Everyone on this earth is deserving of human rights, no matter their legal status.
I’m grateful for the enlightenment I gained from this trip, though at the end of the day, I still felt powerless. This feeling of powerlessness stemmed from the lack of resources with which I’m currently equipped in order to help others. Regardless of the social backlash of aiding migrants, it shaped my values and opened my eyes to the daily struggles they encounter.
