Humane Society of El Paso

Established in 1947, the Humane Society of El Paso is not only the oldest but also the largest no-kill shelter found within the city and county limits. Originally, the shelter was created to handle animals with rabies. However, the amount of cases declined significantly in the 1960’s at which point the Humane Society shifted its efforts to focus on pet overpopulation and homelessness. The first shelter built for the Humane Society was in the Lower Valley on Shelter Place. It would go on to help thousands of animals for 61 years before moving North East to its current location – 4991 Fred Wilson Ave. – in 2008.  Within the following year, the open admission shelter went through a dramatic shift when the Governing Board of Directors and the Executive Director made the decision to become no-kill. This meant that no animal, healthy or treatable, would ever be euthanized, even when the shelter reached capacity. Becoming a no-kill shelter ignited a variety of changes over time but one thing always remained true. The Humane Society of El Paso dedicates itself to enriching the lives of every animal during their stay here. All of our efforts are put towards these hopeful animals by giving them a second chance at life and finding their forever home.  Our mission is, “To prevent suffering, neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals by providing information, raising public awareness of animal issues and promote responsible guardianship and kindness toward all living things.” We at the shelter live by this day by day between the 4,000 animals that are rescued annually.  The Humane Society of El Paso is a private, non-profit corporation and does not receive any funding from the City or County of El Paso, the State of Texas or the federal government. The facility relies solely on adoptions, service fees, fundraising, donations and grants to cover all operating expenses. Your donations provide quality care and a safe, healthy, temporary shelter for thousands of animals every year. Without you we would not exist.

Thank you El Paso for supporting us for all these years._
