Feeding Seniors - Packer (Wed PM)

Wednesday, May 13th, 2020 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm (ET)

About

Help us pack food boxes for low-income seniors enrolled in the Senior Food Box program, also known as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). Thanks to this program and your efforts, elderly neighbors can count on nutritious food every month.

As part of an assembly-line effort, you will help by: packing boxes with food items, keeping the packing area stocked with the correct foods, inserting nutrition information in the boxes, labeling, sealing, and stacking boxes on pallets, and breaking down empty boxes. You will also ensure the food distribution room and all storage space is clean and tidy after each shift.

Are you looking for a volunteer experience for a group of people? Start by emailing Colleen Berger. We’ll work with you to find a shift and you’ll be given the information you need so your group can register online.

Special Considerations: Due to the nature of the work and the safety of our volunteers and employees, good mobility is an important requirement for this position, as is the ability to lift 30-40 pounds when needed (requirement is flexible). Senior Food Box Program volunteers do a lot of bending and reaching, and are on their feet for most of the shift. Volunteers for this role must be at least 18 years old.

Parking: Park in the rear of the Food Bank warehouse on Harris Street, and look for the bright green door for entrance. Parking lot space is limited and in tight supply – we ask group volunteers to please carpool whenever possible. We are not allowed to park in our neighbors’ lot.

What to Wear: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a warehouse environment. You may also want to wear layers as our warehouse is not heated or cooled and temperatures may vary.

When You Arrive: Check in at the front desk. You’ll be asked to check-in on our computer kiosk using the volunteer account you created.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:  This work requires a minimum of 12 volunteers per shift; we reserve the right to combine 2 shifts or cancel a shift if the Branch Manager feels that conditions are unsafe to pack. If this happens, we will contact registered volunteers by email and/or phone.

All volunteers are required to create an account and register through our volunteer website. Questions? Email Colleen Berger the Volunteer and Food Drive Coordinator.
