Description

Program Area: IRCO Madison SUN Tutoring Center

Schedule:

Mondays-Thursdays, 3:15-5:00pm (Tutors choose at least one volunteer day per week)

Position Summary:

Madison SUN Community School provides after-school meals and programming to underserved students at Madison High School. The Madison SUN Tutoring Center offers tutoring in all subjects Monday-Thursday, from 3:15-5pm (Tutors choose at least one volunteer day per week).  SUN Tutors should be able to commit through the end of the school year (June 2020). Tutors who are comfortable volunteering their time and talents in any of the following subject areas are needed for the Tutoring Center:
  • Math: Algebra, Geometry, or Pre-Calculus
  • English and ESL: Reading comprehension & essay writing for students from English as a Second Language (ESL) levels and up
  • History, Social Studies from introductory to Advanced Placement levels
  • General study skills for test taking and organization in all subject levels
  • ESL: Many students need help improving their English skills

Qualifications:

  • Ability and desire to work with high school age students
  • Ability to use good judgement when working with youth in a school setting
  • Cultural competence that enables effective interaction, support, and partnership with diverse and historically underserved students at Madison High School.
  • Must be a high school graduate AND 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a Portland Public Schools volunteer background check.
  • Must be committed to the SUN Model (Schools Uniting Communities)

Time Commitment:

  • Full school year preferred; one full semester minimum commitment.
  • Volunteer Tutors may volunteer a minimum of 1 day per week, and maximum 4 days per week.
