The Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU) operations team wants to improve lighting efficiency and
quality throughout the building by replacing current fixtures with LEDs. To make these upgrades, a lighting audit is
essential to understanding current lighting, opportunities for improvement, and to conduct a financial analysis of any
potential upgrade. A lighting audit is used to understand current lighting fixtures, lamp types, and lighting levels.
SMSU is the “living room” of PSU, offering meeting and event spaces, dining options, student engagement opportunities, and more. Four key values influence SMSU’s work and operations: student development, service, sustainability, and community. The building was completed in phases between 1958-1965. In all buildings, lighting levels, efficiency, and quality influence energy use and user experience. With a variety of space and user types, the SMSU operations team is upgrading lighting to LEDs in phases.
